High School Teacher Summer Internship (HSTSI)

Overview:
This one-week program offers high school teachers the opportunity to enhance their scientific knowledge, develop new classroom and laboratory projects, and make use of the educational resources of the JHU MRSEC. Each summer seven physics and chemistry teachers from area high schools are selected to participate in this internship. This program consists of eight 3-hour hands-on sessions on topics such as scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, crystallography and x-ray diffraction, microelectronics, optical and e-beam lithography, and phosphors for display technology. Additional materials and demonstration kits are provided for the teachers to develop projects for their students. As a result of this interaction, several previous high school teacher interns have brought their science classes to JHU for field trips. Members of the JHU MRSEC have also gone to various high schools to give lectures, perform demonstrations, and serve as judges at science fairs.
Typical Schedule:
| Day 1 | Day 2 | Day 3 | Day 4 | |
| AM | Welcome and Overview of Materials Research | X-Ray Diffraction | Lithography | Transmission Electron Microscopy |
| PM | Vapor Deposition and Scanning Electron Microscopy | Phosphors | Lithography | Feedback and Assessment |
Testimonial:
"This internship opened my eyes to a whole field of chemistry of which my students need to be aware. I recommend this experience to all science teachers."
"My experience this past summer at the MRSEC was undoubtedly the best enrichment activity I have had since I have been teaching."
"I came away from the MRSEC internship intellectually refreshed, and eager to incorporate practical examples and activities from the latest high-tech materials science in my class."
